CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1      OVERVIEW
In our contemporary world, the role of sectorial control cannot be over emphasized it has become a worldwide practice to find government agencies, paratatal or other well constituted authorities charged with responsibilities of monitoring and controlling a particular compartment of business or economic life. These forms of control is expedient  for the smooth running of the sector while maintaining acceptable quality and standard.
In our economy where dubious character people have infiltrated the sector for production of foods and drugs for the mere purpose or aim of making money to enrich their self and their selfish interest, the establishment of a body for the regulation and control of this sector has become a very desirable thing. The operations of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administrations and Control (NAFDAC) are hinged on the general principle of control.
In the face of robust control function placed on NAFDAC by the act, we still find in recent time issue of violation of food and drugs production standard fake drugs importation and sales still exist here and there.  This brings to question the level of performance of the organization and its impact on the economy, this study is sparked off bridge the knowledge gap created by the unavailability of unbiased empirical study on the impact of NAFDAC based on the principles of controllability.
1.2      STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Through the past two decades in Nigeria the problem of fake, counterfeit and adulated drugs has been a very big issue. In addition fake drugs proved a major factor in contributing to high death rate “over 150 children died in 1989 as a result of a formulation error in a drug” such problems led to establishment of NAFDAC which would help, create a fake drug free environment. With this, there would be secure, effective, inexpensive, and good quality medicines. This incident of fake drug was so chaotic that “neighboring countries such as Ghana and Sierra Leone officially banned the sale of drugs made in Nigeria. The issue of fake drug did not just stop there, but it went to the extent that “drugs were hawked even in commercial buses” all these problems affected Nigeria as a whole. There are however no empirical evidence on the relationship between fake drugs and the Nigeria economy hence this study.
1.3      OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The main aim of this study or objective is to examine the impact of NAFDAC on the Nigerian Economy
i.            To examine the role played by NAFDAC on the development of Nigerian economy
ii.          To identify and examine the achievement of NAFDAC on the economic development of Nigeria.
1.4      RESEARCH QUESTIONS
i.            To what extent has they gone with the restructuring of the agency for increase efficiency in regulatory activities?
ii.          Recently, NAFDAC had an upward review of its tariffs. What is the rationale for such adjustment?
iii.        What is the scope of NAFDAC public enlightenment campaign in view of the international dimension of fake drugs business?
iv.         How would NAFDAC describe the state of the pharmaceutical industry now?
v.           Could the NAFDAC Agency give an insight into other regulatory and control activities undertaken since their assumption of office?
1.5      RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
The working hypothesis of this study is as follows:
Ho:  There is no significant relationship between the activities of NAFDAC and the health of the population
Hi:   There is no significant relationship between the activities of NAFDAC and the health of the population
Ho:  NAFDAC has not help in the reduction of mortality death rate.
Hi:   NAFDAC has help in the redemption of death rate.
1.6      SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of the study defines the area of coverage of the research work. The scope of the study was based on the impact of NAFDAC on the Nigerian Economy.

1.7      SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Considering the agonizing issue or situation was faced by health organization, significant of this study cannot be over stressed. We have earlier stated in our overview and the study of the lack of in-depth, unbiased empirical study on the population health of our country, Nigeria government through the decade, have problem of fake, counterfeit and adulterated drugs, the unavailability of such study as we have stated earlier, has resulted to knowledge gap, when we say so is due to publication of magazine newspaper and journal are not been seen by the population, these gap required to be bridged, this study is justified in that it will bridge the existing knowledge gap, it shall directly contribute to stock of existing knowledge, as it will serve as reference point for related studies, from contributing stock of existing knowledge, it shall also be beneficial to students, researcher NAFDAC officials and population of Nigeria. It shall also undoubtedly serve as an update to any researcher work related to it as such may have lost validity in the passage of time.
1.8      METHOD OF THE STUDY
The research work will be carried out in two ways
i.            Primary Data and
ii.          Secondary Data
iii.        The primary Data will involve drafting of questionnaire and submission of questionnaire
iv.         The secondary Data have to do with collecting of literature that has to do with the subject matter e.g. journal, magazine and internet.
1.9      ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY
This stage of the study defines how the study was arranged from its beginning to the end. For any study to be quite successful or result oriented, the research need not to rely on chance. A careful plan of study has to be worked out and followed rigidly.
