ABSTRACT
The research work
examined the role of Adapalm in the stimulation of rural development in Imo
State. Three research questions were formulated and answered using tables and
simple percentages. The data required for the study were gathered from both
primary and secondary sources.
The findings of the
study revealed that the operational activities of the company have benefited
the host community in the following ways:
i. Provision of employment opportunities for
the indigenes of Ohji/Egbema.
ii. Raising the incomes of the people;
iii. Improving the standard of living of the
people of the area; and
iv. Provision of basic social amenities for the
rural community however, the negative effect of the operations of the company
was the problem of pollution which it has crated.
Based on the findings
of the study, we recommended that government should appoint men of proven
integrity as members of the company’s board of directors; it should assist the
company it raising funds and act as guarantor to the company in the case of
obtaining loans from banks; and it should impose lump sum taxation as an
effective means of controlling the menace of pollution. It is our opinion that
if these steps are taken, the impact of Adapalm on the stimulation of rural
development in Imo State will significant improve.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
When
Nigeria attained political independence in 1960, agricultural was the dominant
sector of the economy. It constituted over 65% of the country’s Gross Domestic
Product GDP, and provided the bulk of foreign exchange earnings through the
export “Cash Crops: the sector catered adequately for nearly all the Good
requirement and raw materials for industry in the country. Major exports Crops
included cocoa, groundnuts, cotton, palm oil, and rubber.
In
most developing countries agriculture is both of the main traditional pursuit
and the key to sustain growth has gone hands in hand with agriculture progress
stagnation in agriculture is principal exploration for poor economic
performance, while rising agricultural productivity has been the most important
concomitant of successful industrialization among the roles. Conventionally
ascribed to the agricultural sector in a growing economy are there of;
i) Providing adequate food for an increasing
population.
ii) Supplying raw materials to a growing
industrial sector
iii). Constituting the major source of employment
export
iv) Providing a market for the products of the
industrial sector.
Agriculture
is thus seen as the backbone of theses economics. Nigeria is a predominantly in
agriculture economy and as long as she remain so, the future of this sector in
performing its roles become important.
The
early 1950’s and 1060’s agriculture ploge a crucial role in and economic
development as a nation it provided employment to millions of Nigeria and over
75% of the labour force mostly from rural areas in those golden agriculture
year, contribution from this sector account for about 70% of the Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) this was a period when we mere not only initially self-sufficient
in the production of food crops to feed ourselves but also provided raw
materials for industries and major cash crops for export.
Indeed, agriculture provided the main stimulus
to our national economic growth despite the small form holding and primitive
production system. These contributions of agriculture to the nation over
shadowed all other economic growth despite the small form holding and primitive
productive production systems. These contributions of agriculture to the nation
over shadowed all other economic sectors in the early 1960’s. However, the
reverse was the case of agriculture sector in the seventies when its share to the
GDP declined to 34 percent’s by 1974 this was due partly to the phenomenal
growth during the period and partly to the persistent neglect of the
agricultural sector itself in terms of the relative shore of resources denoted
to the sector. Similarly, the growth rate of the agricultural production
exhibited a down word trend during the period.
The
inadequate domestic food production was reflected in Nigeria, massive food
imports, especially in the 1970’s and 1980’s to argument domestic supply the
decline in the production of some of Nigeria’s leading agricultural export
commodities was most worrisome for instance leading producer and exporter of
palm oil in the 1980’s had become a net importer of this commodity in the mid
-1970’s.
The
performance of agriculture during the review period was undermined mainly by
its neglect coupled with a chain of disincontinue created by the boom among the
latter mere currency over million which cheapened food imports and in two
offered unfair competition to domestic production. Low demand for traditional
food crops in the face of cheap import (such as rice, maize, wheat and grain
based products and sugar) discouraged farmers from expanding domestic output.
In the corn export the growing over valuation of the naira compled with the
implicit taxation of farmers by the commodity boards, put production for export
production for exports at a comparative disadvantage the problem was
accentuated by the enhanced profitability of investment among from agriculture.
This was future compounded by the dising monges in the public and private
sectors, which led to increased rural urban migration with the consequent
decline in the output of the labor intensive agricultural sectors overally the
agricultural terms of trade worsened.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Crop
and plants are at the mercy of diseases and rests and because the rural farmer
are un-educated, they are ignorance of preventive and curative against their
disease pests, empirical evidence has revealed that for genuine development to take place in any
economy, concrete efforts should be made to develop the rural and urban sector
simultaneously. The view is held in some quarters that development efforts in
Nigeria, have ben urban biased. However, some measures have been taken by the
Nigerian government to develop he rural areas. Despite all the efforts rural
development in Nigeria is still logging behind. Therefore, my study has been
induced by this need.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1. To examine their importance and planning
strategies.
2. To
examine the benefit of Adapalm project to the people of Ohjai/Egbema government
area.
The
discuss how the establishment of Adapalm project resonate the rural urban
movement of the youths in the area. To guide our study the following research
question are put forward.
1. Are
the people of Ohaj/Egbema local government area benefiting from company at all?
2. To
what extent has the establishment of adapalm project helped to check the rural
urban migration of the youths in the area?
3. What
are the external costs and external benefits emanating from the activities of
the company?
1.4 SCOPE OF STUDY
The
study will come the activities of the Adapalm project form its inception of
date and from the point of view of its economic impact on Ohaji/Egbema local
government area in Imo State.
1.5 METHOD
STUDY
TYPES AND SOURCES OF DATA
Both
primary and secondary data will be employed in this research.
The
primary source will be obtained from questionnaire and interview the secondary
sources will be both internal and external to the company. The internal sources
will embrace relevant departmental records from the company such records will
be gathered from production, personnel, marketing, sales, and finance
departments, of external data will include published annual report of the
company government publications journals, and newspapers.
METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION
The
study will be conducted in two main part library research and field work.
EXTERNAL DISECONOMIES
As
far as the plantain oil palm industry undustry under consideration is
concerned, the most dominant form of external diseconomies is pollution or
environmental degradation.
However,
in the dynamic world of today, the quality what economists regard as “free
gift’ of nature, such as the air we breathe, the “water” we drink, the quiet environment
and the beautiful landscape we cherish so much etc. is crucially important to
human existence. What should be the foremost concern of every thinking being
therefore is the fact that this quality, for instance, the cleanliness and
freshness of air, purity of
a. Library
Research: this will involve a review of on ready existing theoretical and
empirical months done in the research area related area in order to familiarize
ourselves with the literature. In addition data will be gathered from published
document such as journals, magazines, and newspapers.
b. Field
Work: This will involve schedules and questionnaire and interview schedules
and administering them to tap. Relevant information to supplement the secondary
data personal observation will also be employed. They will cover such aspects
of the company as general survey, liability, socio-economic contact with the
environment and externalities.
c. Technologies
of Data Analysis: Data will be analyzed using table, and simple
percentages.
