IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF
AGRICULTURE IN NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
Nigeria is
essentially an economy with agriculture accounting for significant shares in
G.D.P and total exports. As well as employing the bulk of the labour force.
Agricultural sector is the most important sector in the Nigeria economy. The
development of this sector leads to the development of others sectors in the
state i.e. (Nigeria). Recently this sector has constituted a declining
proportion of the G.D.P for effective and efficient development of it,
government should place more emphasis by investing seriously in technology to
boost the production of the agricultural sector. Technology is a crucial factor
in economic development. As an applied science, it involves vigour and usually
huge expenditure in research institutes to be realized. The study reveals that
if the sector is properly developed, the state and country would, not have food
problem, furthermore, the study identified the lack of capital in technology,
to enhance agriculture and government involvement as problems or agriculture in
Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Agriculture
involves the cultivation of land, raising and rearing of animal for the purpose
of production of food for man, feed for animals, and the production of raw
material for industries. It also involves cropping, livestock foresting,
fishing and processing and marketing of these agricultural products. The role
of agriculture in transforming both the social and economic framework on
economy cannot be over emphasized.
It
is a source of food and raw material for the industrial section. It is also
essential for expansion of employment opportunity, for reduction of poverty and
improvement of income distribution for spending up industrialization and easing
the pressure on balance of payments. In effect, it has been the main source of
gainful employment, from which the nation can feed its teaming population, a
regenerative providing the nationals industries with local raw material and a
reliable source of government revenue.
In
Nigeria context, agricultural sector embraces all the subsections of the
primary industry. They include farming i.e. livestock, rearing, fishing and
forestry.
Agricultural
sector constitutes one of the most important sectors in the Nigeria economy.
Due to the abundance of agricultural resources and high percentage of the
active population engaged in agriculture in the country.
However
Nigeria have comparative advantage of this sector than any other so one infer
that divesting attention to the management of business where exist no national
or professional potential than means to develop or use of modern technology
smoothly often leads to miss allocation of resources in efficiency and
retardation of economic, social and political progress in the country,
agriculture is where we have a national potential.
Unfortunately,
agriculture is highly and variously neglected. We are all aware that the major
part of the out lay of each family in the tower using of our society is on
food.
Today,
the Nigeria family occupies the un-enviable position of being among the worst
fed in the world.
Realizing
this problem, various regimes of government imitated a list of agricultural
policies, programmes to redirect the growth of the sector e.g. (ADP, Atap) etc.
but unfortunately some of these programmes and projects were irrelevant and
imperious to the culture and the society. This sector not only supplies food
but most of the available employment opportunities for many people and is being
provided by this sector (Moro 1996) said that its importance stems from the
creation of employment to large active population and its contribution to the
country’s GDP as well as foreign exchange earning’ Unfortunately, this sector
is facing problem due to inadequate resource and other variable that are
destabilizing its development and these problems includes.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Due
to neglect of agriculture over the years, there has been an influx of rural
dwellers to urban centres in search of greener pastures. This has only
succeeded in increasing the level of unemployment in the nation. Also the
nation’s foreign exchange earnings from the sector have significantly cropped.
Lack
of effective and efficient funding and good government policies have been
identified of an impediment to solving the impact of technology in the
development of agriculture in Nigeria.
Technology
was recognized as a highly crucial factor in the process of agricultural in
development and encouraging local and foreign investment in the economy and
carrying out of research activities into the country’s abundant national
resources. This was to be achieved through foreign financial examine the extent
to which agriculture has influenced the Nigeria gross domestic product (GDP).
The questions now are; do government actions influence the technological
development of agriculture in the state? What would be the impact of such
action in the development of other sectors? Do these actions have positive
impact on the other sectors of the economy?
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
1. To
find out the role of government in agricultural development in Nigeria.
2. To
identify the problem of agricultural development in Nigeria.
3. To
examine the impact of technology on the agricultural growth of Nigeria.
1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This
study the impact of technology on the development of agriculture in Nigeria for
self-sufficiency and sufficient in food production and better agricultural
efficiency in Nigeria. So far to collect materials necessary for this research
from places and also insufficient time allocated to the work, data collection,
financial and economic cost etc.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
The
study will help the government to control some of the related problems. Facing
agricultural sector in the state. Shonekar (1997) states that “for us to
achieve the goals of self-sufficiency in food production, increased rural
employment, production and export of cash crops as well as modernization of
agricultural practices which are the main thrusts of our national mainstream.
The
study would be useful of both government and private entrepreneurs at it
exposes the various ways that agriculture can diversify the economic base of
the country this generating employment opportunities and primary product of
both private and public investors.
